In Event of Moon Disaster aims to illustrate the perils and possibilities of emerging media by reimagining this epic event as a failure. Together with a team of artists, technologists, and researchers, directors Francesca Panetta and Halsey Burgund crafted a micro-narrative that skillfully fictionalizes the orbital flight as a dramatic crash-landing. They did this through re-editing archival footage of the 1969 launch along with fabricating a deepfaked Richard Nixon reading the actual contingency speech William Safire wrote in case the mission ended in disaster.
